A few upcoming events in Montreal

January 2009 is a big month in Montreal on the tech/geek/opensource front. Richard Stallman is coming to town again for CUSEC, there’s a GULSE meeting, Netsquared, Tweetup / Dentevent, celebrity Drupal meetup, etc. Here are some of the details. UPDATE: Added next Share MTL, Installfest GULUM / COMiC and Atelier du libre.

SHARE est une soirée informelle de partage et d’improvisation entre artistes de l’audio, du visuel, de la performance et tous les artistes qui s’intéressent aux arts médiatiques et interactifs (sans y être exclusif). Dentevent, we could start January 21st. Next would be February 18th, etc. (3rd Wednesday of each month.) Location to be determined, maybe Station-C.

CUSEC 2009 – Software (R)evolutions at the Omni Mont-Royal Hotel 1050 Sherbrooke St. West January 22, 23, 24. Richard Stallman will be presenting on the 24th on Copyright (like in 2005). Registration is required. Leah Culver (Pownce creator, now at Six Apart) will also be there. I’m waiting for a confirmation, I might give a talk or tutorial on Identica and/or Laconica. Stay tuned.

Richard Stallman on The Free Software Movement at Concordia University: 1450 Boulevard de Maisonneuve, Room H-110 from 19h until 21h. Richard Stallman will speak about the Free Software Movement, which campaigns for freedom so that computer users can cooperate to control their own computing activities. The Free Software Movement developed the GNU operating system, often erroneously referred to as Linux, specifically to establish these freedoms.
