User group meeting

Hey guys, I'd like to invite you all to join us at Evolving Web's office for another great Drupal meetup. We're very fortunate to that Morgan Tocker, an accomplished MySQL consultant and trainer, has offered to give a talk about optimizing MySQL queries. Morgan works for Percona, which in many ways is the Lullabot of the MySQL world. After his talk, he has promised to make himself available to answer any questions we have about Drupal and database performance.

It'll be Evolving Web's office at 300 Rue St Sacrement, Suite 204. The presentation will be about an hour long, start at 6:30pm (don't be late!), and afterwards we may head out for drinks.

Hope to see you all there!

About Morgan Tocker

Morgan is a MySQL Expert, with interests in Performance Tuning, scalability and High Availability. He is a regular speaker on these topics at MySQL (and PHP) conferences in the United States and Canada.

Before joining Percona, Morgan worked as a Technical Instructor for MySQL (and then Sun Microsystems) in Canada where he taught courses on High Availability, Performance Tuning and Database Administration. He has also previously worked in the MySQL Support Team, and provided DRBD support.

Morgan lives in Montreal, Canada. He's content in settling there after moving from Australia in 2007.

Presentation: Optimizing Queries with EXPLAIN

By far the best way to improve the application performance is to improve the performance of individual querries. Sometimes this can be a case of just adding a simple index, but other times it will require some additional input to be able to rewrite a query. MySQL exposes a way for us to be able to see the internal path that it uses to execute a query via the EXPLAIN command.

In this presentation, Morgan will show how to read the cryptic output of the EXPLAIN command, and what it means in practical terms. The target audience is someone who is familiar with how to write basic SQL statements but wants to learn more about how they work under the hood.

The presentation will be similar to a webinar he did for MySQL University, http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/Optimizing_Queries_with_Explain
