A great time was had by all!

Seriously, the Scala workshop was very cool. The actor model was new to almost all attendants and needed some explaining. Looking back, I should have explained a bit more about how the this works. From what I saw, nobody stumbled upon the Scala syntax that much. The people that were there were all experienced programmers, thus may not have needed much hand-holding regarding syntax.

A few years ago, I fancied the idea of creating my own software consulting business. For some reason, I thought “Masala Labs” would be a cool and witty name for it (“masala” means spice mixture in Hindi, and who doesn’t like spicy things?), so I registered the domain along with the associated small business paperwork in Nova Scotia.

Un retour d’expérience

Durant mes vacances de la nouvelle année, j’ai pris le temps de mieux organiser ce que j’appelle ma lecture « séquentielle »; celle que l’on fait du premier au dernier mot d’un document. Pour moi, depuis l’arrivée de l’hypertexte au début des années 1990, ma lecture est progressivement devenue presqu’exclusivement « hypertextuelle » et conduite par l’heuristique.

I got the chance to come by a pretty cool project recently: Python Moka.  It consists of functional programming friendly implementations of standard Python dictionary and list classes.  Then it struck me:  wouldn't be nice to have Erlang-ish pattern matching functionality to Python?

So I crafted a small Python package scratching an itch I have had for way too long:  function dispatching based on pattern matching.  For those interested, here are the relevant links:
