Leverage versus Anger

This is going to be another of those strange posts that sometimes crawl out of me to infect minds. Please handle with all due care.

I think we’ve all had that Hulk moment as a reaction to some awful situation when anything is possible.

“I’m gonna flip this car I’m so mad!”

Ignore Bebo

This post is bilingual and short. Ce billet est bilingue et court.

I got a bebo invitation by mistake. I didn’t know it was a mistake. Had a look, completed the subscription process and bam! What do you know, it sent out an invitation to 1000 people and mailing lists in my gmail contacts. Anyone I ever wrote to, anyone who ever wrote to me, since forever. You can ignore bebo or ever better, let them know how much they scewed up. I already did. Sorry about that, very sorry! I deleted my account.

A few upcoming events in Montreal

January 2009 is a big month in Montreal on the tech/geek/opensource front. Richard Stallman is coming to town again for CUSEC, there’s a GULSE meeting, Netsquared, Tweetup / Dentevent, celebrity Drupal meetup, etc. Here are some of the details. UPDATE: Added next Share MTL, Installfest GULUM / COMiC and Atelier du libre.

Hey, you’ll be a criminal either way

I spent more time trying to get an audible.com audio book playing than it took to listen to the book. I have lost every other piece of DRM-locked music I have paid for.

“Thinking of buying from audible.com or itunes?

Remember, if you pirate something it’s yours for life. You can take it anywhere and it will always work.

Why use identica / laconica / openmicroblogging?

UPDATE: Louis Gray published his article Identi.ca Users See Service as Choosing Cause Over Community

Louis Gray asked why we use identica and less than an hour later he had received 20 public replies. I think there’s a story right there!

Michael Geist, Why Copyright audio is now up

Leslie Regan Shade at the Canadian Journal of Communication tells us that the Why Copyright? talk by Michael Geist is now online.

I mentionned this last week after I went and took the liberty of converting the audio to speex:

Laconica / identica : coming up next

Release 0.6 of Laconi.ca promises lots of new features! Thanks to Evan, Ciarang, Zach and all the other contributors for their great work on laconica.

Here are a few new features coming our way to Identi.ca and other federated microblogging websites:

Michael Geist @ Concordia, talk on “Why copyright”

The question is good, “Why Copyright?” If it’s only to fall prey to another type of enclosure (Facebook, Youtube, you name it) then I don’t think we’re doing a very good job. Like I said earlier, my new keyword is autonomy.

Copyright is supposed to be an incentive, a limited time monopoly offered to creators, to enable them to make more and better works available to the rest of us.

Lots going on in Montreal on the Free Software side

I was looking at my Free software aggregator, Informatique libre and found out a bunch of things.

Lots of Linux activity in Montreal. Red Hat arrive à Montréal, ouverture du bureau de Savoir-faire Linux à Ottawa (SFL est une compagnie de Montréal) et Canonical (Ubuntu) engage.

laconi.ca microblogging platform, now with tags and multilingual

Laconica, the free software powering identi.ca and related microblogging sites just got a few new features tonight. Users can now choose the language of the interface, between English, English (NZ), English (US) and French (FR). While this doesn’t seem like a lot of choice, Evan expects the community to quickly create the needed translation for as many languages as possible. Klingon and Esperanto included :)
