Firefox 3.5 + Ubuntu: what’s new and how to get it

.

Many Ubuntu user are complaining about the delay of Firefox updates in the Ubuntu packet depot.
Actually the Firefox version 3.5.x will be updated, afaik, only with the next update of Ubuntu itself.

The new features and performances of Firefox are awesome and I understand that you would like to have it as soon as possible. But you have to know that some Firefox addons are not compatible with the new version so I’ll give you a way to have both version: 3.0.11 and 3.5.1 in the same time. But first a video:

Via  YouTube – What’s new in Firefox 3.5?

One of the  The safest way to have Ff 3.51. in Ubuntu Jaunty and keep the version 3.0.11 is:

1) Download the Ff archive file from Mozilla

FF3.5-01

2) decompress this archive file in /home in a directory like /home/YourUserName”, which create a sub-directory “firefox” . In this example it’s /home/sysadmin

FF3.5-02

FF3.5-03

3) in console mode, copy files and subdirectories of Ff in directory /opt ( the ~ {a “tilde”} is = to your home directory and the minus r is for “recursive” ):

sudo cp -r ~/firefox /opt

FF3.5-04

then delete the firefox directory from your personnal directories (since you have copied it in /opt)

4) Copy the Firefox launcher (Ff icon) and paste it on your desktop then:

Modify the properties of the launcher (Ff icon) with a mouse’s right click ->properties…

from “firefox %u” to “/opt/firefox/firefox %u

FF3.5-05

FF3.5-06

You may also change the launcher name for something like “Firefox 3.5″ as you wish.

That’s it. This way you still have Ff 3.0.11 and the new version Ff 3.5.1.

Have fun! :)

Edit: 2009/07/21  Another easy way

Another easy way is to use the Ubuntuzilla package. It installs all the Mozilla software in the version and language you want.

UBUNTUZILLA
