Koumbit Happy Hour: Web-based Independent Journalism on the 2010 Olympics
We have invited members of the Media Co-op to come fill us in on how they've used the web, and particularly Drupal, to coordinate the production of an alternative independent news source. We'll also get a glimpse at the reasons behind the ongoing resistance to the 2010 Olympic Games. Please join us for a very special Koumbit Happy Hour on Friday, February 5th, to meet the Co-op and talk about the Olympics.
The Olympic flame will be lit in Vancouver on February 12th, in a climate of intense political repression. Vancouver has passed muncipal laws punishing the display of anti-Olympic signage; one of the largest police and military mobilizations in Canadian history is already underway; and activists and organisers around the country have been receiving visits from CSIS and RCMP agents for months.
Most people are aware of a resistance movement towards the 2010 Winter Olympics, but surprisingly little of the reasons behind this resistance have surfaced in the mainstream media. The Media Co-op has been very actively reporting resistance to the 2010 Games; they are a pan-Canadian network of independent journalists who are best known for their flagship monthly paper, The Dominion.
You are invited to join us on Friday, February 5th, 2010 at 5pm.
Our offices are located at: 6833, avenue de l'Épée, suite 308, à Montreal.
